Consulting Services from Bruce MacEwen

Do you feel confident your firm is strategically well-positioned for the challenges of globalization, segmentation, and consolidation in the 21st Century?

How are you dealing with ever more demanding clients? Are you winning your fair share of "beauty contests" and RFP submissions?

Are you winning "the war for talent?" Are you attracting the right kind of lateral recruits to grow your firm:s

  • In the geographic areas you're targeting?
  • In the practice specialties you want to expand?

Are your business practices and systems contributing to heightened levels of client service--or are they a drag on productivity?

Let's talk through these challenges together.

Having practiced both in two large New York City firms (Breed, Abbott & Morgan; and Shea & Gould), as well as in-house (nearly ten years as a securities lawyer with Dean Witter/Morgan Stanley on Wall Street), I'm intimately familiar with the promise and the perils of law firm/client relations from both sides of the table.

I understand how today's corporate counsel are caught between the need to retain top-flight firms to deal with their thorniest matters while being under ceaseless pressure inside the corporation to cut legal spending.

As our industry adapts to today's increasingly competitive and unforgiving business environment, I can help your firm achieve practical, comprehensive approaches to a wide range of strategic and managerial issues. Click here to start a conversation.

I've worked with some of the largest global and North American firms, as well as dynamic boutiques.

Recent engagements have included an extensive ROI analysis of a new KM initiative at an AmLaw 20, including recommendations to enhance the functionality of the new KM system. I've analyzed resource allocation, as well as consolidation planning, how to cope with segmentation in the AmLaw 100; and web presence optimization.

Much of my work with firms like yours is based on my broad and distinctive access to the brightest people thinking about our industry and our profession today—including your peers at other firms as well as carefully selected academics.

And since you're familiar with "Adam Smith, Esq.," you know that I approach challenges from the perspective of deep and thoughtful analysis, together with a nuanced view of what people on the firing line can realistically be expected to achieve.

"Deliverables" include reports, whitepaper's, and presentations: Onsite, or at your firm's offsites and retreats—Whatever is most valuable and useful to you.

A bit about me: I've written for, been quoted in, or been the subject of articles in The New York Times; The Wall Street Journal; Fortune; Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Radio; The National Law Journal; and Law Firm, Inc.

I frequently appear as a speaker or panelist at legal industry conferences domestically and overseas.

I'm an adjunct professor at SUNY/Stony Brook's Graduate College of Business, where I've taught the core course "Strategic Technology & Innovation" in the MBA program exclusively for law firm leaders, and I recently became one of six charter members of the Editorial Board of the US edition of the UK legal publication, Managing Partner Magazine. I'm also a member of the New York State Bar Association's committee on Law Practice Management.

I was educated at Princeton University (BA magna cum laude in economics), at Stanford Law School (JD), and at NYU's Stern School of Business (MBA candidate).

A native Manhattanite, I live on the Upper West Side with my wife and dog.
